Yesterday, I worked with a 50-year-old woman who was Spanish-speaking. Before the interpreter could translate her words to English, the woman’s facial expressions spoke volumes. I saw the frustration as she described the knee pain she felt when she tried to walk for exercise, so painful she had to take ibuprofen after to function. I saw the hopelessness as she described all she used to do before she gained weight and how she does not know if she will be able to do those things again. I saw the desperation in her eyes as she told me she wanted to be able to enjoy her 10- and 12-year-old daughters while they are still young.
We talked about how exercise does not need to be painful to be effective, how she can listen to her body to find ways to exercise that work for her body right now. As we cleared away the myths and came up with a plan, I saw her face soften and relief in her whole body. I saw hope before the translator even said her words, “I can do this! Thank you!”
